Tragedy Strikes Central Oregon After Deadly School Attack

2 min read

The quiet community of Bend was shattered on Thursday afternoon when a gunman opened fire at Silver Rail Elementary School, leaving four people dead. Law enforcement officials confirmed that the victims include three children and one adult. The chaos began around 1:02 p.m., just an hour before students were scheduled to head home for the day, starting with reports of gunfire hitting a vehicle before the assailant moved inside the school building.

Upon arriving at the scene, officers discovered that the suspect had already been shot and killed inside the facility, though it remains unclear whether the shooter was taken down by police or another individual. Police spokespeople described the event as devastating, noting that such violence is unheard of in their riverfront city. Emergency crews spent several hours meticulously evacuating approximately 400 students from their classrooms to ensure everyone’s safety.

In the wake of the massacre, Governor Tina Kotek called for statewide unity and support for the grieving families, stating that no community should ever have to endure such a tragedy. All schools within the Bend-La Pine district will remain closed on Friday as residents process the shock. The FBI has joined local authorities in a full investigation into the motive behind the attack while investigators continue to verify final casualty numbers.
